Commencement Honors

2017 University of Southern California Wall of Scholars Award Ceremony

Renaissance Scholars

The Steven and Kathryn Sample Renaissance Scholars distinction recognizes undergraduate students who have excelled in their studies while completing a major and a minor (or two majors) in widely separated fields of study. At USC, we believe that adding perspective through the breadth of interdisciplinary study is imperative to meet the demands of work and life in the 21st Century. Students who a pursue study in a variety of disciplines from USC liberal arts college, professional schools, and arts schools may be eligible to receive the Renaissance Scholar honor upon graduation.

Discovery Scholars

The Discovery Scholars distinction recognizes undergraduate students who have excelled in their studies while demonstrating the ability to create exceptional new scholarship or artistic works. At USC, we believe that undergraduates do not have to wait for graduate school or professional experience to make significant contributions to their discipline. Students who engage with USC faculty to generate outstanding original research or creative work may be eligible to receive the Discovery Scholar honor upon graduation.

Global Scholars

The Global Scholars distinction recognizes undergraduate students who have excelled in their studies both at home and abroad. At USC, we believe that developing global literacy and intercultural competence is critical to navigating an increasingly interdependent global community. Students who have participated in international programs (spending at least 10 weeks abroad during their undergraduate studies) and have completed a meaningful capstone project related to their international experiences may be eligible to receive the Global Scholars honor upon graduation.

Renaissance Scholars, Discovery Scholars, and Global Scholars are honors that students may apply for and will receive at the time of graduation. Each year, ten exemplary students from each of the three distinctions are selected for a $10,000 prize either for graduate study or, for Discovery Scholars, creative projects.

Valedictorian & Salutatorian

At USC, it is the custom to name one student to serve as the University Valedictorian and one or more students to serve as University Salutatorian.  The USC selection process recognizes the very highest levels of academic achievement, but it is also more holistic and takes into consideration service and leadership as well.
