Fellowship Advising
Our office provides in-depth advising for a select group of fellowships and awards included in our Advising Portfolio. By focusing on these specific opportunities, we’re able to offer structured, comprehensive support throughout the application process.
We encourage students to begin by reviewing the fellowships in our Advising Portfolio and identifying at least one opportunity that aligns with their interests and goals. Taking time to explore these options in advance helps ensure that your advising appointment is focused, productive, and tailored to your needs.
Advising appointments are typically one-on-one sessions lasting 30–60 minutes.
What to Expect in a Fellowship Advising Appointment
Fellowship advising meetings center on a specific opportunity within our Advising Portfolio. During these meetings, advisors will:
- Discuss your overall fit and competitiveness for the selected fellowship
- Explore how the opportunity aligns with your academic, leadership, and professional goals
- Review eligibility requirements and expectations
- Go over campus and national deadlines
- Clarify the application process and advising timeline
- Provide guidance on preparing strong, competitive application materials
Our goal is to help you move forward with clarity and confidence in the fellowship application process.
Advising Windows
Each fellowship in our Advising Portfolio has a designated advising period during the academic year. These advising windows allow us to provide timely, structured support aligned with campus and national deadlines.
Before submitting an intake form, please review the advising window for your fellowship of interest. We are unable to schedule an advising appointment outside of the designated advising period.
If you have questions about a specific opportunity and it’s currently outside of it’s advising window, you’re welcome to email us (ahfstaff@usc.edu) and we’ll be happy to assist over email.
We also encourage you to carefully review eligibility requirements before submitting your intake form. Requests may be declined if basic eligibility criteria are not met.
Intake Survey submission MUST include at least one fellowship of interest.
Before requesting an appointment
Individual appointments provide AHF staff the opportunity to learn more about your background and interests, in order to offer you intentional guidance towards a specific fellowship pathway. You are expected to research all fellowship information available on our website for program overview, eligibility, application materials, and campus deadlines if applicable.
Ready to meet with us?
After you have reviewed all fellowships material online, complete an intake survey to schedule a meeting with AHF staff.
You do NOT need to complete the intake form for inquiries regarding: Academic Achievement Award, Africa Student Fund, or USC Scholar Distinctions. Instead, email your inquiries directly to ahfstaff@usc.edu.
